Making Fun Treats for a Kid’s Birthday Party! 🎈🎈🎈

Back in the day, Arlene must have gotten a lot of mail from viewers asking about recipes they could make for a children’s birthday party, because that’s exactly what inspired this episode from 1994!

Although she didn’t have children of her own, Arlene loved being an aunt to all her nieces and nephews and all of their kids. So for this birthday special, she rounded up her great nephew Josh and some of his friends for a party! The menu includes lots of kid-friendly recipes like mini pita pizzas, funny face sandwiches, chocolate chip cookie kids, sunshine pops, banana blizzard smoothies, and birthday cake cones.

The funny thing is, when the time this episode was filmed, none of the kids were actually celebrating a birthday! But that didn’t stop them from having a good time. And if you make these recipes for the children in your life, we know they will too.

Note: The recipe for chocolate chip cookie kids uses the standard recipe off the bag of chocolate chips, however it does require a special baking pan to make the kid-shaped cookies. If you don’t have such a pan, you could still make regular-shaped cookies and have kids decorate them.

Sunshine Pops

These homemade pop-sickles are easy and tasty!
Course Dessert

Ingredients

  • 2 cups orange juice
  • 1 cup vanilla nonfat yogurt
  • 6-8 small paper or plastic cups
  • 6-8 plastic spoons
  • a glass or metal baking dish
  • plastic wrap

Instructions

  • Combine juice and yogurt in a blender and blend until completely smooth.
  • Place cups in a baking dish so that they fit loosely and won't slide around or fall over. Fill cups evenly with juice mixture, and stick a plastic spoon in each one.
  • Stretch a sheet of plastic wrap over the cups, and poke each spoon handle through the plastic, then wrap the plastic tightly around the pan, so that the plastic holds the spoon handles up straight, so they will stay in place in the freezer.
  • Place entire pan in freezer and freeze 8 hours or overnight. Before serving, run just a little warm water over the outside of the cups so they'll loosen and slide off. Enjoy!

Banana Blizzard Smoothies

Course Drinks

Ingredients

  • 1 large ripe banana, frozen
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup vanilla yogurt
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla

Instructions

  • Peel a large, ripe banana and break into 6 small chunk. Place in a sealed airtight container and freeze for 4-6 hours until hard.
  • In the jar of a blender, combine frozen banana chunks, milk, yogurt, and vanilla extract. Blend on high for 1 minute or until completely smooth and no banana chunks remain.
  • Pour into glasses or cups and serve with straws. Recipe can easily be doubled. Enjoy!

Funny Face Sandwiches

Course Main Course

Ingredients

  • 6 slices whole wheat bread
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 3 bananas, peeled and sliced lengthwise
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 jar maraschino cherries, drained (8 oz)
  • 1/2 cup chopped dates or raisins

Instructions

  • Lightly toast bread slices in a toaster or the oven; careful not to get them too dark.
  • Spread each slice of toast with about 1/4 cup of applesauce, then use the fruit to design funny faces for each of the sandwiches: coconut for hair, cherries for eyes, dates or raisins for a nose, and the sliced banana halves for a smiling mouth. Allow kids to design their own faces with all kinds of silly features.
  • Serve sandwiches right away, before the applesauce makes the bread soggy. Enjoy!

Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes

These look like ice cream cones, but surprise, it's actually cake!
Course Dessert

Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow, chocolate, or white cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • ingredients needed to make cake mix (eggs, oil, milk, etc.)
  • 24 small, flat-bottomed ice cream cones
  • 2 tubs cake frosting, any flavor (15 oz)
  • sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare cake mix batter according to package directions and leave in a large bowl.
  • Fill each ice cream cone with half-full with about 3 Tbs of cake batter (give or take, depending on size of the cones). Do not fill up to the top, or else batter will expand during baking and spill everywhere.
  • Place filled cones onto a muffin tin or baking sheet. Place in the oven, careful to not knock over the cones. Bake each batch for 20-30 minutes, until cake is done and a tooth pick inserted in the center of each cake cone comes out clean. Repeat for remaining batches. Remove cones from pans and cool on a wire rack for 1 hour.
  • Cover the tops of the cones with frosting and swirl to look just like ice cream. Then top with sprinkles. Makes 24. Enjoy!
