A wedding is a wonderful thing to celebrateβtwo people giving their lives to each other in love, joined by family and friends. But before the wedding, there has to be a bridal shower! It’s a chance for other women to “shower” the bride-to-be with love and gifts as she embarks on this new stage of life. It’s also a chance for her sisters in Christ to share wisdom and encouragement from their own lives. While many things can contribute to a happy marriage, like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, the most important thing is for both husband and wife to have Jesus at the center of their lives. With a strong faith in God, a marriage can weather any storm.
Of course, good food is also an important part of marriage, and that includes the bridal shower! In this classic two-part episode from 1996, Arlene shows how to plan a Victorian themed bridal shower, with recipes for heart shaped cookies, wedding rings cake, tea time sandwiches with blue cheese spread and egg salad spread, and date nut bread sandwiches with cherry cream cheese spread.

Heart Shaped Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 3 cups flour
- decorator icing in tube in wedding color
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- In a large bowl, combine butter and sugar with a mixer. Beat in egg and vanilla. Add baking powder and flour, one cup at a time, mixing after each addition. The dough will be stiff; blend last flour in by hand. Do not chill dough.
- Divide dough into 2 balls. On a floured surface, roll each ball in a circle approximately 12 inches in diameter and 1/8 inch thick. Use heart shaped cutters as guide; dough should be only slightly thinner than cutter. Dip cutter in flour before each use. Using a straw, punch a hole in the cookie.
- Bake cookies on ungreased cookie sheet on top rack of oven for 6-7 minutes, or until cookies are lightly browned. Remove to wire racks and cool completely. Frost with your favorite glaze. Using the wedding color, write the bride's name on 1/2 the cookies and the groom's name on the other half. Let icing completely dry.
- Tie one of each of the cookies together with wedding colored ribbon, tying plastic golden rings at the bow. Use as favors or announcements. Makes about 4 dozen cookies. Enjoy!
